Emma Lavelle's march through October has continued unrelentingly, with the Ogbourne Maizey trainer notching her 10th winner of the month at Huntingdon this afternoon with General Medrano, now two from two over fences following a successful debut at Uttoxeter 3 weeks ago. Of her 22 winners this term, there have been plenty of individual winners; always a sign of good health and strength in depth in a yard.

Meantime, she's not the only Wiltshire handler to be making a mark. Neil King enjoyed a Grade II winner at Cheltenham on Friday when Lookaway made it a hat-trick in the Sharp Novices Hurdle, rescheduled from its former slot in Cheltenham's November fixture. Winner of his maiden in May, this progression gives the other Barbury king something to get his teeth into.

Meantime, news of two former Barbury fixtures which have resurfaced after  season break following the sad closure of the popular Wiltshire course. The Tedworth is set to stage a Spring fixture at nearby Larkhill on Saturday March 23rd, filling a gap in the fixturer list made by the disappearance of the Avon Vale fixture.

The Vine & Craven, cursed by a string of abandoned fixtures due to weather then pandemic constraints, reappears at Kingston Blount on Sunday April 7th, both proving that it's difficult to keep a good hunt down.

The Wiltshire and Berkshire downs have always played a big role in racing, both Flat and Jump. And the latter county's racing heritage plays a major role in the sale of a big property not far from Newbury. Chievely Manor, owned by the Spence family, was home to David Morley's training business, where Celeric was trained to win a Northumberland Plate, Yorkshire Cup and the 1997 renewal of the Ascot Gold Cup.

Spence died in 2021, and his widow has remaned in the house since, but has opted to downsize. It's a perfect chance for another racing enthusiast to take on a property with a rich racing heritage.
