Emma Lavelle has less runners during an average July than I have fingers, so any runner she sends should send a red alert to those that follow trends.

In the past 5 years, with the notable exception of 2020, when racing was halted in March and resumed again in July, runners from the Ogbourne Maizey stable have rarely exceeded a dozen during July and August.

Gold Link got the yard on the winner's sheet on Sunday however, to ensure that July was not a blank month. The seven year old prefers good ground and has enjoyed a busy summer without finding himself in front until Sunday's novice handicap chase at Stratford, where he and stable jockey Tom Bellamy clicked to win easily by 8l.

Winners have been elusive for Alan King a mile further up the road. With only 6 Jumps runners in the past near 2 months, no more is to be expected. The Flat horses are running well, without hitting the front. Despite this, the stable's 20 winners have accumulated nearly £420,000 in prize money, by any other measure, a good result.
