Edwardstone was one of just two runners sent to Cheltenham's valuable November fixture from Barbury, a reflection of the quality needed to compete at Racing's top table nowadays. Sadly, he was no match for an awesomely impressive Jonbon in the Shloer Chase. He will reappear in the Tingle Creek in early December.

Nevertheless, the sport is not merely about Cheltenham. Saturday featured fixtures at Wetherby and Uttoxeter as well, and Barbury achieved better cut-through there, with a double at the Yorkshire course in ground altered to heavy after just one race.

A short-priced double by Grandeur d'Ame and Favour and Fortune brought King's seasonal tally to 15, and given the infancy of the season in terms of major races, there is plenty still to win. Tom Bellamy was in the plate on both winners.

The Wiltshire Point-to-Point scene is about to kick into life too. The Hursley Hambledon sets off Larkhill's season on Sunday November 26th, and despite the rain, ground conditions are described as good. Larkhill is back up to strength too with the readmission of the Tedworth, formerly held at Barbury to the roster of fixtures there.
