Greatwood, the Marlborough-based charity that uses ex-racehorses to educate disadvantaged children and adults with special needs, is to profile itslef through sponsorship of the feature event at this weekend's Barbury International Point-to-Point on Saturday January 20th.

Greatwood. for so long associated with the major handicap hurdle feature of the final day of Cheltenham's November meeting, will lend its name to the feature Veterans Conditions |Steeplechase, for horses aged 10+ over 3m 6f. Long distance races in the Point-to-Point sector are relatively rare.

We are delighted to have been given this opportuntu to profile our work and become involved in such an innovative and worthwhile concept," commented Helen Yeadon, who set up Greatwood with husband Michael in 1998. "The work at Greatwood is so rewarding on both a human and equine level. Our supporters and benefactors are amazingly generous in offering us unique opportunities to make our case to both the racing world and the community in which we live and work, t state our case for the life-changing effect that horses have on young adults and children."

The International Point-to-Point at Barbury is Greatwood's first foray into the racing world at this level. A large crowd is anticipated at Barbury to see Irish and British riders and horses compete on a British Point-to-Point course. There is a strong contingent from Ireland headed to Barbury.

Nigel Bunter, Chairman of the Barbury Race Committee, added, "Greatwood is a superb fit for Barbury. Not only does it serve the 2,000 or more horses trained for racing around Marlborough, but the work that Helen and Michael have achieved is truly inspirational. We're delighted to see Greatwood represented at Barbury, a venue that is synonymous with high quality sport, racing and eventing."
