October is normally a productive month for the Ogbourne Maizey stable run by Emma Lavelle and partner Barry Fenton. And whilst it's premature to say this month's runners will live up to expectations, two winners from three runners isn't a bad start. We are just one week away from the traditional curtain raiser to the Winter Jumps season, at Chepstow, when a £75,000 Hurdle and £50,000 chase grace a card well known for producing high quality novices.

The Lavelle stable notched their first October winner in unseasonably soft ground at Bangor yesterday. Six year old mare Queen Antoinette had the rest eating cake after a determined neck victory over Drumlee Spud in a mares novices hurdle. The daughter of Champs Elysees has done little wrong in her brief racing career to date, running a 3 1/4l third in her only other run 2 years back. She had a little in hand in this victory under stable rider Tom Bellamy, and is worth following.

The well-being of the yard was underlined at Warwick on Thursday when another mare, Flight of Freedom, ran out a comfortable 8l winner on her hurdling debut in a mares novice hurdle, again under Bellamy Jnr.

The Lavelle runners have looked in need of a run, finishing in the frame or just outside to date, but the stable is largely focused on the core autumn-spring period of the season, so don't read too much into that. Be sure that they will be coming to hand over the next few weeks as Saturday cards return to our screens with valuable races on a far more frequent basis.
