As a racehorse trainer, Nicky Henderson is unparalleled. The six-time British jump racing Champion Trainer has forgotten more about the sport than most people will ever know, and his current string is undoubtedly impressive.

Recently, he gave the lowdown on some of the horses he has in training at the moment, and he had some valuable insights to offer. Here’s what Henderson had to say about some of racing’s biggest equine names.

Epatante

Those who frequent horse racing betting sites know it’s a sport brimming with potentially exciting outcomes. And those familiar with betting sites know that details like promotions and the site's reputation matter a lot. With many contests throughout the year, there are plenty of opportunities to get lucky, and for anyone who placed a bet on Epatante, there’s a good chance they profited from one of her numerous 2022 wins.

According to Henderson, the plucky mare had a great season, following her 2020 Unibet Champion Hurdle win with Grade 1 victories in the Aintree Hurdle, Christmas Hurdle, and Fighting Fifth. Her trainer pointed out that one thing Epatante proved was her ability to stay over two and a half miles. This means that while she may not have the talent to beat Constitution Hill or Honeysuckle, she could be a good contender for the Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Maries Rock

Henderson is not a man who’s easily surprised, but even he has admitted that he didn’t realise quite how good Marie’s Rock was until her win in the Mares’ Hurdle at the Punchestown festival back in April. Describing her progress as “incredible”, the seasoned trainer said he could see her going over three miles easily.

Champ

Pointing out how good he was in the Long Walk, Henderson said Champ will probably stick with hurdling for the foreseeable future. He revealed that the gelding had recently had more work done on his back, but there were no plans to retire him.

Walking On Air and Wise Guy

While these two have both recently had wins, Henderson acknowledged their inexperience and said their chasing careers may be put on hold for now. He’ll most likely wait and see where they belong over hurdles before making decisions about their futures.

Buzz

Buzz performed admirably last season, but the grey gelding may not be a fixture of the racing calendar for long. According to Henderson, the pelvic injury he suffered may spell the end of his career, with no guarantee he’ll come back from it. It’s very much a case of waiting and seeing, although the horse is currently sound. Despite this, there’s some residual muscle wastage and the vets remain unsure of the outcome.

Doddiethegreat

Like his stablemate Buzz, Doddiethegreat’s career may also sadly be at an end. Though unbeaten during his time on the track, he suffered a nasty gash to his deep flexor tendon during his winning run at Kempton. He’s said to now be looking good, although his last lot of scans told a less positive story.

Tell us, which of Nicky Henderson’s talented string are you most looking to seeing run again during the upcoming season?
