Alan King's flagbearer, Trueshaan, has yet to score in 2 runs on the Flat this Spring, and by his trainer's open admission, has fallen short of expectations. The Barbury stayed finished a 7l fourth to Coltrane in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot today after pulling for his head from the start.

Winner Coltrane looks set to figure prominently in all the key staying races of the summer, capitalizing on his Doncaster Cup and Lonsdale wins of 2022.

Trueshaan, however, may be set to see some obstacles come the autumn. He's always been a softer ground horse, which has played to his strengths when winning the British Champions long Distance Cup in 2020 and 2021. He's been a remarkable torch for King's successful growth as a trainer of flat horses.

King reported to the Racing Post, "I’ll probably say he’s not the horse he was. Hollie said they were getting slower and slower, and she was very happy with him throughout the race. It’s just that last bit – there’s not the fight there used to be.

"I’m not going to keep doing this to the old boy. I’ll train him for Ascot but I’m not going to rule jumping out. It might just give him a new lease of life."

Imagine, however, Trueshaan's speed in the top handicaps or graded races over jumps. Rated 121 on the Flat, he'd have to be a big player if he takes to jumping. The Flat's loss is our gain.
